Small Businesses Unite In Snohomish

Artisans Mercantile ~ Glunion Groupies ~ Maple + Moss

Live the SnoCo Life is supported by you, our amazing subscribers, and our sponsors Original Pilot House Coffees of Monroe, Lake Stevens Drywall, and Shed Gal Portable Buildings of Lake Stevens, Snohomish, and Sultan.

Downtown Historic Snohomish has long been “THE” place to shop local in Snohomish County. With so many amazing shops, restaurants, and more, you could literally find yourself getting lost in it all for hours. The best part, by far, has to be the variety. There is a little something for everyone:

Shopping

For PNW made products, Artisans Mercantile is your spot. Looking for trendy clothing, then hit up Maple + Moss Boutique or The Chic Boatique. Home need sprucing up, try something old from My Eclectic Home or something new from Retreat Interiors.

Eating

Sit down to farm to table style cooking at Roger’s Riverview Bistro or classes at Della Terra. Go classic with pizza from Cathouse Pizza or burgers from Fred’s Rivertown Alehouse. Get fishy at Andy’s Fish House and most definitely dig into breakfast at Jake’s on 2nd.

Drinking

If you love coffee, hit up Looking Glass Coffee, or if you prefer tea, stop by Everything Tea. Need something a bit stronger, then hit up Skip Rock Distillers, Kasia Winery, or Randolph Cellars.

Now, you’re probably wondering why I’m bringing up businesses across the downtown area, when this is a feature on Glen & Union businesses teaming up. The answer is easy. You see all the amazing places to to go and things to do in Downtown Historic Snohomish, but what you don’t necessarily see is how businesses in the area come together to support one other, whether it is through charm and wine walks, pop-ups, or shared events. Snohomish businesses work together, not against each other, and it is pretty awesome.

The newest union, between Artisans Mercantile & Maple + Moss Boutique is no exception. The two shops have come together to promote the businesses located along Glen & Union Avenues through Glunion Groupies, a Facebook group where you can keep up with the goings on in their neck of the woods. It is a little reminder that there is more to see and do beyond 1st Street.

Here with more about the group and the local businesses behind it are Judi Ramsey of Artisans Mercantile and Kortney Henry of Maple + Moss Boutique:

First things first, how would you both describe your shops? What kind of items can people find there?

Judi: Most first time customers describe us as very eclectic and I think that fits pretty well.  Artisans Mercantile means a General Store of Artisnal products and that describes us to a T.  If it is handmade, or small batch manufactured here in the NW States, there’s a very good chance we carry it.

Kortney: Maple + Moss caters to adventurous, confident and stylish, womena nd men, helping them make a statement through the clothing they wear at any age! Throughout the boutique you will find a wide range of wardrobe must haves from cozy sweaters, cute dresses, basic denim, fun graphic tees and super soft everything! You will also find lots of PNW inspired items, quirky candles, cheeky mugs and one of a kind accessories.

What made the two of you create the Glunion Groupies? What is its purpose?

Judi: Kortney and I have been having events together for over a year, but we found it was hard to get information about our shops and events to the people who most wanted to come. We love our customers and wanted to do something special for them. Glunion Groupies allows us to share things exclusively with them.

Kortney: We created the Glunion Groupies in hopes to cultivate an exclusive community within our shops that benefits to our most loyal customers! By teaming up, we are able to join our customers together across both shops as well. The group allows us to increase awareness of both shops existence in a fun exclusive way!

What types of things and events can members expect from the group?

Judi: We will be sharing our new products, limited runs, and pop up shops. We also come together to host First Friday events each month. It is a party essentially. We even serves wine in our shop, thanks to it being an exclusive event for group members, and offer goodie bags for the first ones to shop. Usually there will be some cool bits and pieces, nice value in them.  We also have a monthly drawing for those who attend, and your tickets roll over into the pot for the bigger drawing to come in the future…so the more times you come the more entries you have for the big prize coming up. As we get in the groove we will offer more special prices for our Groupies, like Kortney did recently at her pop up shop.

You can also use the group to keep you up to date with individual events offered by our shops, like Artisans Third Thursday After Hours Art event. This has become a great place to work on our unfinished (or un begun!!) projects while talking, laughing, and a little crying maybe.  We also have wine and cheese and cracker type nibbles while you work. Each month we have a local artist offering a guided craft project, so you can always just come and learn something new.

Kortney: Group members of the group can expect perks like exclusive events, first look product reveals and sale specials only for our Groupies. For example our Glunion Late Night which is open only for the members the First Friday of each month. The event  is one of the most exciting perks of being a member. Both shops are open late from 6-8pm the first Friday evening of each month and offering some type of special, fun event in the shop such as hosting a guest, workshop, or special sale with local nibbles and drinks provided.

Why do you think it is important for local businesses to work/partner together?

Judi: When you run your own business, you are responsible for everything that gets done. It is a joy to share the work and have someone to remind  you that “we need to get our posts out”, etc.  Kortney has been very good at helping me stay on time!

Kortney: I think its extremely important for local business to work with one another and partner together in order to grow our businesses as a community. The community aspect of small business is what drove my passion for the boutique and being a part of Historic Downtown Snohomish is a dream come true.

What is your favorite thing about your partner Maple + Moss/Artisans Mercantile, and have you made any fun purchases there?

Judi: I love Kourtney’s vibe at Maple + Moss, and her outdoor/NW focus. We bought a T for my hubby for Father’s Day, (which I love ’cause it is so soft!!).  This Winter, I tried to resist buying yet another scarf, but Kortney just kept posting pictures of her blanket scarves and finally I couldn’t resist any longer!!  I love it!  Often I don’t need a jacket, just toss that on and done!

Kortney: I absolutely love the eclectic nature of Artisans Mercantile and the fact that everything is locally handcrafted! I have bought a few gifts there for friends, but my favorite items I have bought for myself are the crochet soap bags and essential oil roller balls.

What is your favorite Glunion area business and why?

Judi: Well, I am the best customer for my own shop, so I would have to say my own if the vote was by amount of product purchases, but honestly I enjoy each and every one.  Country Yarns is amazing (I have taken up needle felting). Jehan’s has a great boho vibe, the game shop has provided a long forgotten favorite from my childhood, Peter (Clover) is leaving soon and he will be greatly missed.  The brothers are really helpful, and I have bought a few display pieces from them.  And of course Snohomish Bakery … the pear almond croissant…do I need to say more.

Kortney: Its really hard to choose just one of my favorite Glunion area businesses because I love them all for different reasons! I get my hair done at Luxe Salon, enjoy a specialty beer at Spada Farmhouse Brewery, have the most delicious pizza at Piccola Pizza and snag the most unique items from Artisans Mercantile! And there is even so much more our Glunion area has to offer being around the corner! I highly recommend people take a little time to check it all out if they haven’t before!
